The Elegance of Sof

The Angora goat has been raised exclusively in Ankara and its surroundings for many centuries; with this characteristic, it has been almost identified with the city. The texture selected in this study was taken directly from the mohair of an Angora goat. The dry climate, steppe vegetation, and high-altitude open areas of Central Anatolia constituted the fundamental environmental conditions that made the mohair of the Angora goat qualified. This unique geography ensured that mohair became a shiny, light, and durable fiber; it carried Ankara to a privileged position in mohair production for centuries.

Sof fabric woven from the mohair of the Angora goat stood out as a highly prestigious textile product preferred especially in palace circles during the Ottoman period with its fine structure, natural shine, and elegance. This fiber, known as “mohair” in Western languages, was referred to as “Angora” in world literature for a long time; sof fabric became one of the main products that ensured Ankara was recognized in international trade networks. In this respect, sof is not only a woven product but a concrete expression of the economic and cultural relationship the city established with the world.
